Standing Watch: The Veterans Guarding Our Schoolhouses and Sanctuaries

There was a time in this country when a man finished his service, came home, hung up the uniform, and the question of what came next answered itself. There was a farm to run, a trade to take up, a town that needed him. The mission changed, but the serving didn't stop. That was understood.

What We Did With 85 Acres Outside Wewoka, Oklahoma

A little over a year ago, Harmony Hills Ventures bought 85 acres of rolling country a few miles outside Wewoka, in Seminole County, Oklahoma. It came with a house, a second smaller home, a big pole barn, a scatter of older barns and workshops, a creek, a couple of ponds, and a stretch of shoreline on a quiet 52-acre lake, shared with only a handful of neighbors. It wasn't a blank piece of ground. It was a place somebody had lived on and worked for a long time. We've told you before that we buy land and improve it. This is a good example of what that looks like when the land already has a story, and we thought it was worth telling now that most of it has found new owners.

Ten Acres Outside Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Brought Back to Life

Some pieces of land you buy for what they are. This one we bought for what it was underneath. Ten acres on the north edge of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, just past the city line and a short walk from the county fairgrounds. Same family for decades. A good-sized pond. Behind the parcel, 80 acres of privately held recreational land, so the view from the back of the property is timber and sky, with no subdivision pressing in behind you. We saw all of that on the first visit. We also saw everything that had gone wrong.

A Farm in Newport, Michigan, and the Homes It Will Become

There's a stretch of Monroe County, just east of Interstate 75 and a few minutes shy of Lake Erie, where the land still does what it was always meant to do. It grows things. The fields lie flat and open under a wide sky, the tree lines run straight along the section roads, and in the evening the light comes in low off the lake and turns the whole place gold. This spring, Harmony Hills Ventures closed on roughly 51 acres of that ground in Berlin Charter Township, outside the community of Newport. It's been a working farm for generations. We intend to keep the best of what it is while giving it a new purpose: four to five residential homesites, each ten acres or more, with electric service and municipal water at the road.
